A major tragedy was averted on Thursday when a boundary wall (metal railing) fell on a coach of the Delhi Metro due to heavy wind and rain. The accident which occurred on the tracks between Jangpura and Lajpat Nagar metro stations at around 4:05 pm led to the disruption of Violet Line service. As per the preliminary information, no one has been injured.

The Violet Line connects Delhi’s Kashmere Gate to Faridabad’s Escorts Mujesar. In the wake of the mishap, overhead electric supply was turned off, commuters inside the train had to exit the coaches and walk along the tracks in order to reach the Lajpat Nagar Station platform. “The services are being run in two loops — Nehru Place to Escorts Mujesar; and Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate, till the railing is removed,” said a senior Delhi Metro Rail Corporation official.

As per the official, “the approaching train, moving towards Lajpat Nagar station, was put on hold” due to the incident. All passengers were safe and later taken to Lajpat Nagar station.

In a bid to remove the railing, the overhead electricity supply between the corridor’s Central Secretariat and Nehru Place sections had been turned off. As soon as the railing is removed, the normal movement will be restored.  In May, Delhi Metro train services on the Violet Line were affected for more than 90 minutes because of a glitch in the Over Head Electrification (OHE) system.

A portion of railing on the ramp (when the train comes out from underground Jangpura stn towards Lajpat Nagar elevated station) has fallen on down the track(going towards Faridabad) between Lajpat Nagar and Jangpura section around 4:05 pm due to wind/rain impact. As a result, the approaching train towards Lajpat Nagar was to be put on hold due to this obstruction. All passengers were safely taken to Lajpat Nagar platform. To remove this railing, OHE has been put OFF between Central Secretariat & Nehru Place section.

Services are being run in two loops now till railing is removed: 1. Nehru Place to Escorts Mujesar; 2. Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate. The full line normal movement will be restored as soon as the railing is removed.
